open spaces for the use of the Public it has been determined to convert the vacant ground situated near West Point into a Park at a cost of $10,000.

In order to assist the Private Nursing Scheme which is now being worked by a Committee of Ladies, the Secretary of State has been recommended to sanction the erection of a building to accommodate the private Nurses and provision for the estimated cost of such building, viz. $12,000 has been made in the Estimates.

The proper housing of the Police has also engaged the attention of the Government. The Central Police Station is to be extended by adding another storey. Mount Gough Police Station is to be enlarged. Married Quarters are to be provided at Tsimsha-Tsui and certain property is to be resumed in order to provide Married quarters for the Indian Police.

Provision has been made in the Estimates for having these various works commenced or completed during 1902, with the result, it is to be hoped, of improving the efficiency and adding to the comfort of the Police.

4 August, 1901.

4 October, 1901.

I attach two reports from the Acting Director of Public Works dealing with the Estimate of Public Works Extraordinary. To carry out the large programme of Public Works Extraordinary it is certain that the staff of the Public Works Department will have to be still further increased. This question has, however, been referred to a Commission of Inquiry which is at present sitting. In the meantime the extra Assistant Engineers provided for in the Estimates for 1902 should be obtained.
